Exploring Flashes and Floaters

Flashes are brief flickers of light, often caused by the vitreous gel tugging on the retina. Eye floaters are tiny specks or threads drifting across your vision, appearing when the vitreous shrinks or clumps. While usually harmless, they can signal retinal issues, affecting tasks like reading or driving.

What Causes Flashes and Floaters?

Eye flashes and floaters are typically caused by changes in the vitreous — the clear gel-like substance that fills the inside of your eye. Here are some common causes:

As you age, the vitreous gel naturally shrinks and becomes more liquid. This can cause it to pull away from the retina, leading to the perception of floaters.

When the vitreous pulls away from the retina, it can cause flashes of light.

Trauma to the eye can cause floaters and flashes.

People with diabetes can develop blood vessel abnormalities in the retina, leading to the perception of floaters.

Certain types of migraines can cause visual disturbances, including flashes of light.

A sudden onset of flashes and floaters could indicate a retinal tear or detachment, which requires immediate medical attention.
